Words for Tots v1.1
Give your child a head-start at reading fluency. Your child is guaranteed to learn to read children books with you by their side. Your kids will love their new found ability right away and have fun reading with you. Build a healthy relationship with your children today. Start as early as 2 years old.
This new flash card app presents a random word from the the Dolch word list, one at a time. You could use it to teach and educate your children easily and quickly. Touch or tap the word to see the next random word.
The list contains 220 "service words" that children has to recognize in order to achieve reading fluency in English. In addition a 95-word noun list is also contained in this app. Many of the 220 Dolch words can't be "sounded out" using common sound-to-letter implicit phonics patterns and have to be learned by sight; hence the alternative term, "sight word." Although the list is divided into grades, for native English speakers, all the words in the Dolch should be mastered by the end of 1st grade. The benefit of teaching your toddlers before elementary school is that they will be ready to absorb reading material early on.
This app divides the words into these categories: pre-primer, primer, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and nouns. You can choose from these categories or use all words from all categories. Switch categories at any time to match your toddler's capability.
The Dolch word list is originally compiled by Edward William Dolch, PhD. Houghton Mifflin asked Theodor Geisel to write and illustrate a children's primer using only 225 "new-reader" vocabulary words. The result of that challenge was Dr. Seuss "The Cat In The Hat."
I originally wrote this app to teach my three year old daughter these word. I showed her these words, pronounced them, and explained the meaning to her. She can now recognize and pronounce most of the pre-primer words. It's a proven method that will work for your child as well. You'll see results in a week.
